The author writes:

For this comic I had no idea whether or not to place each individual pixel in MS Paint, just simply draw it in Photoshop, write a hideously complex Java program to draw the pictures for me, or to just simply hand paint everything and scan it into the computer.

I wound up doing all four, a particular method for each panel. I think next time I'll just stick to using Lego mini-figures and plasticine.
