The author writes:

In this world water isn't very slightly blue, it's very slightly pink. Which makes the oceans a deep hot pink colour. And everyone likes to tile their swimming pools with red tiles to make the water look clean and clear.

Also, hazelnuts are not classified as botanical nuts, while cashews are.

These two facts are related, but not in the obvious way.
