The author writes:

EDIT: A correspondent writes to inform me that the background character in the first panel of this strip is an "ableist and offensive stereotype" and that I should be ashamed of myself. Frankly I fail to see their concern, and nor do I understand why they felt moved to travel sufficiently out of their way to take offence at this rather than the cock-fighting and bear-baiting on which Blackdrip is gambling in the second and third panels.

And to anyone offended by the cock-fighting and bear-baiting I say: what else is there to do of an evening in 18th century London?
