Liko: {holding what is allegedly a "jelly-filled donut"} "These donuts are great!"
Liko: "Jelly-filled are my favorite!"
Liko: "Nothing beats a jelly-filled donut!"
Roy: "Geez...Wonder where she inherited her idiot hero genes from?"

Never mind that it wasn't actually the idiot hero who originally said the line...
October 9, 1998. At 6:30 AM Eastern time that day, television history would be made over five WB stations and five Fox stations as those stations were the first in the United States to unleash Pokémon's unique brand of jelly-filled donuts on their audience. As the episode in question made its way across the rest of the country, the world never saw jelly-filled donuts the same way ever again. Now, twenty-five years later, the new generation is about to make their appreciation for this particular kind of jelly-filled donut well-known!
[Note: Originally, I had made this idea with a Square Root of Minus Garfield strip in mind, throwing both the latest Pokémon generation and the infamous reference into the Donut Wars strip; it would have been Roy's "donut", and Liko eating it. That iteration of the idea was scrapped for a few reasons: one, I felt I already had enough material in the Square Root of Minus Garfield pipeline as it was at the time; two, even if I did feel like I didn't have enough material in that pipeline, time was not on my side with a high likelihood of missing the key date just by queue position; three, the Donut Wars is already a worn-down running gag and this combination wasn't really exploring any sort of untapped potential. What you're seeing here is actually most of the key ideas from the original brainstorm intact, the only thing missing is the Garfield strip foreground (yes, there would have been background replacement in the original idea).]
