Jon: Are you sure you packed everything?
Lyman: Yes.
Lyman: Oh, Jon! I will miss you so much! Will you miss me?
Jon: Don't be silly, of course I will miss you, Lyman.
{Jon thinks about hitting Lyman in the head}
Jon: Goodbye.
Lyman: See ya. {Lyman walks out}
{The door is closed}
Lyman: {from behind the door} Um, Jon... This is the basement, let me out.
Lyman: There's a dead cat in here and I think I smell bitter almonds.
Lyman: Jon?
{a close-up of Jon laughing maniacally}

The author writes:

The eternal mystery - what happened to Lyman? - needed to be solved. Originally I had him just leave for whatever reason, as seen in the first four frames and Jon thinking by himself that he always hated Lyman's moustache which is pretty terrible to tell the truth (hence Jon's thought of hitting Lyman in the head and Lyman going somewhere).

However, Jim Davis' explanation to the reason of Lyman's disappearance ("Don't look in Jon's basement") proved funnier to explore, so I altered the strip accordingly (and managed to slip in something which could be interpreted as an alternate background premise for Garfield Minus Garfield - just think about that). The question remains: Why did Jon kill Lyman? Maybe he was maddened by the incident shown in Jon and Lyman #5. Maybe he did always hate Lyman's moustache. Maybe Lyman used his sandbox. We'll never know.

P.S. I'm perfectly aware.
