The author writes:
Exasperated by Garfield's erratic behavior and lack of motivation, Jon took Garfield to a mental health specialist who diagnosed the summation of decades of monotony. Jon was morbidly elated, finally to have found an answer and to also have a reason to be freed of his caretaker burden. In Jon's mind, Garfield is thankful for escape from a tortured existence, but because Jon cannot hear Garfield, we will never know Garfield's true thoughts as his memories and vision fade with each blow of a gardening implement.
