Strip by: Man Demon
{Thorfield with winged helmet and Mjölnir appears surprised}
Thorfield: There it is!
{Thorfield leaps into the air, mouth open and pointing Mjölnir at his foe}
Thorfield: PREPARE TO MEET YOUR MAKER, SLUDGE MONSTER!
{Jon looks at Thorfield with indifference with Thorfield's foe slain before him, as Thorfield salutes}
Jon: Why did you mangle that liver, Thorfield?
Thorfield: Because that's what heroes do.
The author writes:
My wife and I will often joke with each other with the "Because that's what heroes do" meme from Thor: Ragnarok for things that are completely mundane, or during narrated recaps on TV or audiobooks, where every sentence is "someone did something" and I follow up each sentence with the meme.
I wondered if SRoMG had used that meme at all and found there were no published comics. Then I did a search for "Thor" and there was only one published comic, more focused on Thor's cape. Doing a quick search of Garfield comics for the phrase "why did", it turns out the first time Jon asks Garfield this question is at the end of a week where the storyline has Garfield looking for a Sludge Monster and putting on a sugar bowl as a helmet. Needless to say it was easy to go from there and change his fork and helmet into Thor's accoutrements.
Original strip: 1980-07-05.
