The author writes:

Okay, so I had a minor peeve with the original version of this strip. Jon acted like he actually heard Garfield through Garfield's thought bubble, but it has been confirmed multiple times that Jon, and basically any other human in the strip, cannot hear Garfield's thoughts. I tried to fix that peeve through this, giving Garfield an actual speech bubble to talk through, actually allowing Jon to hear him. This submission was also inspired by strips #151 and #1962.
