The author writes:

Many of Garfield's best gags are visual reveals. The characters talk a bit, and then the camera frame zooms out and we see what they're talking about, punchline! Or maybe we're taken off-guard by the punchline at the same time as Garfield. Here are a couple strips that are adjusted to a fixed frame, one where the reveal happens prematurely and one where it never happens.

I think they have their own kind of charm. In the first, we're left scratching our heads to why there are ladders balanced on Garfield. Fleas, not ladders, are the punchline. The second leaves us wondering what Jon could possibly be doing off-screen. Garfield seems somehow more sinister. What horrible trouble could Jon have gotten himself into, which Garfield is standing by idly and mocking?

Also, the reason they're both from 2014 is totally not that I bookmarked some strips for this idea and put it off for four years. I would never do that.

Original strips: 2014-02-21, 2014-08-07.
