Jon: Godzilla, did you eat my jelly-filled Tokyo?
Godzilla: It was like this, Jon. It happened to be a rogue city wounded in a jungle bakery
Godzilla: Crazed with fear and pain, it charged my mouth and I was forced to eat it in self-defense
Jon: It's times like this I wish I understood him

The author writes:

When a compound adjective consisting of a noun before an adjective occurs directly before the noun it modifies, a hyphen is required, unless

1. I comes before E after C, 2. b2 - 4ac < 0, or 3. it's your turn, your opponent has at least one man on the bar, and the stakes have been doubled exactly once during the match.

Honestly, Jon, this is elementary stuff.
