The author writes:

Done in the spirit of the googly series.

I cannot parse these expressions as "excited". If anything, they look like "light-headed from water deprivation" to me. I can only suppose that Jim Davis sketched these faces during a brainstorming session, thought they were funny, and found an excuse to wedge them into a strip.
