{a number of donuts sitting on the table}
Sign: One of these donuts has been poisoned
{Garfield approaches the donuts}
Sign: One of these donuts has been poisoned
{Jon, looking unimpressed, sits beside the donuts, the sign having been modified}
Sign: Now there are two

The author writes:

This one hearkens back to a tale I once heard (I forget where) of the melon farmer who attempts to stop thieves raiding his crop by making a sign claiming that one of the many melons have been injected with poison, only to return the next day to find his melons undisturbed and his sign appended by the thieves with a note saying "Now there are two".

Deciding whether Garfield has actually followed through on his threat or is just manipulating Jon's paranoia and hoping for a fresh crop of thrown-out donuts is an exercise I leave to the reader.
