Strip by: Rusty Ralston
Jon {on the phone}: Hi, Grandma? It's Jon, calling to wish you a Happy Holidays!
{Jon (?) mindlessly repeats the phrase "Hey Girl, Hey Boy superstar DJs here we go!" over and over again, so much that the speech bubble cuts off his words}
Garfield: Turning up her hearing aid?
Jon: Turning down the Chemical Brothers CD in her stereo. {"The Chemical Brothers" has been replaced with the Chemical Brothers logo}
The author writes:
So, Garfield has been running since the 19th of June 1978, which means that it will be 50 years old by the start of the next Olympiad. It occurred to me that pretty soon, a majority of the population of the world will have been born after Garfield premiered*. And there has been a "new" Garfield strip every day since 1978-19-06. Of course, the fun side to all this is that, for a near-majority of the population, there is a Garfield strip that coincides with the date of their births. So, for a laugh, I looked up the Garfield strip for my date of birth, and it's surprisingly relevant to my life. Mainly in that I love music, and I love listening to it loud. Of course, my choice of loud music isn't Heavy Metal, even though it is great, but Electronic Dance Music. Namely stuff from the UK and France: Orbital, Daft Punk, Modjo, The Eternals, Pieter Gabriel, and my personal favorites: The Chemical Brothers.
Anyway, I had a bit of fun with this one, basically referencing one of their most iconic songs, "Hey Boy, Hey Girl". It's basically a staple of their concert set list and even non-EDM fans can probably recognize it. It was a bit frustrating trying to basically recreate the incomplete panel, but I did what I could. Anyway, if you want to do this with your own birthday, then go right ahead, but be forewarned that your mileage and results may vary.
