The author writes:

What should have been a quick gag strip took me quite a while to finish. I got the idea for the joke, then got bogged down trying to figure out how to depict a borehole being dug. Do I draw it? Do I make it in a 3D program? In the end, I decided to yank a picture off Wikipedia and use that as the background.

Initially, I used this picture. However, someone pointed out that the Creative Commons license used for the picture and the one used for the comic were incompatible. So I ended up replacing it with this picture, which is in the public domain.
