Calvin: It's scary to see a monster under the bed at night.
Calvin: It could be a nice furry monster like you, me, or Cookie or Herry.
Calvin: {Scared} But it could also be a big scary HUNGRY monster with sharp teeth, claws and an ATTITUDE!
Hobbes: Elmo wouldn't be under the bed. He can't stand how dark it gets.
Calvin: Let's just get some sleep and never think of that monster under the bed, Hobbes.
The author writes:
Based off of The Monster at the End of this Book starring Grover and its sequel that features Elmo. Calvin gets scared of monsters that hide under the bed. The best way to ignore them would be to either hide under the covers or just go back to sleep and pretend you never saw it before. There may be other monsters inside Calvin's bedroom. But if you turn on the lights, you'll see that there's no such thing as monsters.
Original Calvin and Hobbes strip: 1988-10-14.
