Drunkard: I've become a beer taster
Clancy: How does that work?
Drunkard: If you buy me a beer, I'll taste it!

The author writes:

We used to get Clancy in a rubbish free paper, delivered every other week. The author's website promises a stable of quirky recurring characters interacting in a rural Australian setting underrepresented by other strips, and offers a few early strips that make some effort at this. The strips I remember (a few such examples on the author's website, at painfully low resolution) would show Clancy and a nameless companion at a pub or farm. They would tell a trite old joke, rewritten to spread over three panels. The middle panel would show the pair in silhouette, and the last panel would have the characters' positions swapped. The pub scenes would make it clear this is not just a break in the line of action, but a swapping of seats between panels.

This was all years ago. The rubbish free paper disappeared years ago, the void eventually filled by another without delivery or comic strips. The paid local paper doesn't even have funny pages these days. Maybe Mark Lynch has turned it all around, and produces three panels of solid comedy gold six days a week, as indicated by the 2020 award the strip has somehow won.

Original Clancy strips: Is 3714 a number? Are there really thousands of these? (More Clancy and boomer comics of all shades at cartoons-a-plenty.com)
