  1. Nancy doesn't understand punctuation, and is doing what she thinks her coach actually wants her to do.
  2. Nancy understands punctuation, but is feigning ignorance so she can behave as she likes.

Possible interpretations of my edit:

  1. Nancy understands punctuation, and is teaching a lesson on its importance to her coach by literally following her instructions.

So all I've really done here is eliminated any room for alternate interpretations, kept the joke intact, and made it even more in line with Nancy's character.* Win-win-win.

*The part of her character that is snarky and self-serving. I don't think being eager to teach others lessons in grammar is part of her character.
