Just a quick reminder that the equinox (autumn if you’re in the southern hemisphere, spring if you’re in the north) happens on 20 March in the Americas, and 21 March in the rest of the world. That’s the day you can help me to measure the size of the Earth, by doing a simple measurement!
See my post on Eratosthenes’ measurement for details!
What, having their own measurement system and definition for “football” wasn’t enough, Americans have to have their own equinox now?
No, it’s the stinking International Date Line. The USA isn’t the only country here. We also have Mexico (who know that a football is supposed to be round) and the Canadians (who agree with Mexico) as our closest neighbors.
As for my location, I got rained out. No maths from me.
Metric footballs are spherical, but imperial footballs are oblong.
Awkwardly the imperial system does have a ball that matches the metric football but it’s called a soccerball instead. The of course there’s the incompatibility between the imperial and metric footballs. Attempting to use one when the other is required could potentially cause mobs or other unsportsmanlike behaviors.
It’s probably a forthcoming proof of the sphericity of the Earth: different places disagree on the times and even dates of astronomical events, such as equinoxes, solstices, eclipses of Jupiter’s moons, and so forth.
Unfortunately it was overcast all day here. Sorry.
