This is a great episode of Assignment: Earth. This is the new series that Gene Roddenberry began when it became clear that his now defunct first attempt, Star Trek, was floundering in the ratings and wouldn't last more than two seasons.

Assignment: Earth would of course go on to become wildly successful, with multiple spin-off series, feature films, and most recently a new series of remake films set in an alternate universe, while Star Trek remains nothing but a failed footnote that only a few of the most ardent Sevenites have even heard of.

Captain's log, Earth year 1968. We have time travelled to the 20th century for historical research, to find out why a promising TV series pilot was not picked up.

Scotty: Intercepting transporter beam.
Spock: From at least 1000 light years away.
Scotty: No transporter can reach interstellar distances! Not in this universe!

Gary Seven: I'm Gary Seven. You must beam me down.
Isis: Meow.
Gary Seven: Yes, Isis. The future they come from depends on it.
Kirk: What are you, some sort of catspaw?

Kirk: Put him in the brig. Don't search him for weapons. And place a guard who will stand with his back to the prisoner.
