Several of our artist volunteers have illustrated the opening scene of our comic, set at the beginning of the Great Zzyback Race:

Once every decade, great spaceship pilots cluster to the Zzybak galaxy to compete in this, the most grueling, cutthroat competition in the known universe! The rules are simple: be the first to pilot your ship to various checkpoints, making a circuit across the cosmos. Even with a high-powered craft, this can take weeks, and leads through some of the most hostile areas of the known universe. Piracy and assault between teams in open space is also common. Regardless, each season hopefuls new and old compete for fame, glory, and a massive credit prize! One new hopeful this year is Captain Jake Starr, an unemployed shipbuilder with big aspirations. Together with fellow engineer Daisy "Dazer" Hoshino, the duo built the spacecraft Infinity, a ship that boasts an impressive homegrown engine for this competition. Too bad the ship's frame is held together mostly with duct tape. ("Hey, it still works!") With their pooled money, they hired a third crewman, a mysterious being called "Jimmers", and joined the race! Will they manage to win? Heck, will they be able to pay their fuel bill at the next port? Find out... on Infinity on 30 Credits a Day!

Now it's the turn of the Infinite Monkeys to choose which page (or pages!) will open the comic.

• Because of the open nature of the description the artists had to work with, the submissions are quite different in what they depict, but they fall into three distinct categories:
  • Pre-race crew interaction on the ground (#1 and #2).
  • Pre-race interviews with media (#3, #4, #5).
  • In space, near the starting line (#6, #7, #8).
  This means that it is possible for us to arrange the pages in a chronological order and accept more than one of these pages as the canonical storyline. Therefore, there are two voting forms on this page. Before ranking your preferences for the artwork to be used, please select one of the options in the first poll:
  1. Use just one of these submissions as page 1, and move on to a new round of artwork submissions for page 2.
  2. Use 2 of these as the first 2 pages: the two most popular in different categories.
  3. Use 3 of these in a chronological sequence as the first 3 pages: one "ground crew", one "interview", and one "in space".
  4. Use 4 of them: one from each category plus the next most popular.
  5. Use 5 of them: one from each category plus the next two most popular.
  6. Use 6 of them: one from each category plus the next three most popular.
  7. Use 7 of them: one from each category plus the next four most popular.
  8. Heck, let's use all of them as one long sequence of 8 pages!

  If multiple submissions are chosen, it's possible the design of the spaceship Infinity will vary enough to cause continuity issues. IGNORE THIS ISSUE. We can either explain it away later in story, modify some pages to make the ship design the same in each, or simply choose to brush it under the carpet. Note that the exterior of the ship is only explicitly shown in submissions #1 and #8, and partly in #4, so this is a very minor problem anyway. Either way, do not take it into account in your voting.

• The artists of the black and white submissions (#1, #2, #5, #6, #8) have all said they would like their work coloured by the volunteer colourist team. So these pages will not remain black and white in their final form.

Outcome

The pages are: #2, #5, #8. The winners were decided in round 4 of the vote counting, which left options 1, 2, 5, and 8. Pages #5 and #8 are from the "interview" and "in space" categories, while #2 led #1 in the "ground crew" category. Since by the rule of selecting one from each category, the next to be eliminated cannot come from either "interview" or "in space", #1 is eliminated at this point.
