The author writes:

Someone accused me of ripping off a punchline from a cartoon in The New Yorker. Strangely, they neglected to mention which strip it was.

EDIT: According to forum members, the most likely candidates are 291, 470, and 680. Can't say I recognised the punchline anywhere.

EDIT 2: The complainer wrote back. Strip 602 has the offending punchline. Since it's plot-relevant, and changing it would lessen the humour, I've left it as-is, and have sent a letter to The New Yorker telling them to change their cartoon.
