Arlene: The police are on their way. We only have so much time...
Arlene: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Garfield: I think so...
Garfield: Woof! Woof! Woof!
Arlene: Sigh.
The author writes:
Film noir is a genre of film, mostly from the 1930s-50s, involving criminals, hard luck, smoking and unhappy endings. Many film noirs were lower-budget productions, and hence, cheaper black-and-white film was used; the results could sometimes produce beautiful imagery that is still striking today.
Immediately upon seeing this original strip, I thought of a still from the Wikipedia article on film noir. The image, from The Big Combo, shows two figures, a man and a woman, seen in silhouette against a cloud of white smoke in an alley. The rest followed naturally.
Original strip: 1989-02-22.
